Despite the efforts of Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhary, Pakistan will once again have two Eids as the self-proclaimed Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Masjid Qasim Ali Khan has announced to celebrate Eid Today (June 4). Shahab-ud-din Popalzai, claimed to make the decision in light of 25 witnesses received from ‘all over the provinces’.

KP Observes Eid-ul-Fitr Today

Soon after the announcement came from Masjid Qasim Ali Khan to observe Eid today, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Monday (June 3) announced that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrate in the province today after taking into account ‘testimonies’ of moon sighting all over KP, according to KP Information Minister Shaukat Yousufzai.

Fawad Confirms Eid on June 5

On the other hand, Fawad Chaudhry has confirmed the birth of Shawal moon on Monday and said that it is likely to be sighted on Tuesday (June 4).

The federal minister while thanking the masses for their support said that the birth of the moon will occur at 03:02pm on Monday and its age will be four hours and sixteen minutes at sunset. The moon will be 28 hours and 16 minutes old at sunset in Karachi on Tuesday. Fawad said the Almighty Allah and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) have also ordered the use of study. He said Hijri calendar and application details have been uploaded on the website of Ministry of Science and Technology.

Moon Sighting Controversy

Words’ war over moon sighting was started when Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry criticized Ruet-e-Hilal committee chairman Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman. As Fawad onMay 6 said that the Ruet-e-Hilal committee should carry out the sighting voluntarily.

The minister had said up to Rs4 million are spent on the moon-sighting procedure every year. “Where is the wisdom in spending Rs4 million on moon-sighting for Ramzan and Eid? At least the [Ruet-e-Hilal] committee should do it voluntarily. All around the world [the sighting] is done without remuneration,” Chaudhry said. “I respect the ulema. I have given an opinion. Everyone does not need to agree,” he added. “Educated scholars are supporting my suggestion,” Chaudhry said.
