The Peshawar district administration on Wednesday (May 15) in a crackdown against illegal hoarders and seized on Wednesday 9,000 kilogrammes of lemons from a cold storage in Chamkani, Peshawar, said an official statement. The lemons were stored so that they could be sold at double the price in Ramazan.
The administration imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the hoarder and seized lemons were sold in an open auction. The administration is committed to carry out more raids to discourage hoarding and ensure availability of essential commodities in the market. The recent lemon recovery could reduce the price could decrease from Rs400/kg to Rs300/kg.
Shortage of lemons, which are mostly used to make lemonade for Iftar, is just one example of the unlimited greed in the Holy month of Ramadan. The artificial shortage created due to hoarding had pushed the price of lemon from Rs200 to Rs450 per kilogram.
